MARK YOUR CALENDARS – MAY 5 IS NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER

 

The nation is always in need of prayer — prayer for protection from our enemies; prayer for wisdom for our leaders; prayer for awakening and revival. From our earliest days as a nation, leaders have recognized their need for the help of an almighty God.

 

The first Thursday of May has been set aside as a National Day of Prayer since 1988. Prior to that, Harry Truman established a National Day of Prayer in 1952 and signed a bill proclaiming that a National Day of Prayer must be declared by each subsequent president. There have been numerous national calls to prayer throughout our history, beginning in 1775 with the Continental Congress.

 

This year’s National Day of Prayer is Thursday, May 5. We urge you to join with millions of believers across the nation who will be uniting their hearts in prayer for the nation. These are troubling times as we see the culture continually shifting away from biblical values. In addition to that, people across the nation are weary from all of the COVID mandates and restrictions.

 

We encourage you to participate in community observances of the National Day of Prayer. If your community doesn’t have an observance on that day, why not rally the pastors of the community and plan a service where your people can pray together for the nation?

 

We are in great need of a spiritual awakening in this country. Every spiritual awakening throughout history has been preceded by seasons of prayer and often of fasting. This is not a political event but an attempt to unite believers together to earnestly seek the Lord on behalf of the nation.

 

A National Prayer Committee was formed in the ’50s with Vonette Bright as its first chairperson. David Butts of Harvest Prayer Ministries currently serves as chairman. This committee is comprised of prayer leaders from across the nation who are involved in mobilizing various segments of society to pray for the nation.

May 5, 2022, is not a Republican day or a Democrat day. This is a day for believers to unite their hearts in prayer for a nation that is in serious need of His intervention. There are numerous resources on the National Day of Prayer website to equip your church to pray and to help you mobilize others in your community.
